Shirley Smith Hurd Sabo

January 1, 1938 - February 23, 2024

Shirley Smith Hurd Sabo, 86, a longtime resident of Walpole, NH left this earth peacefully on February 23, 2024, at the Jack Byrnes Center in Lebanon, NH. Shirley was a New Year’s baby, born on January 1, 1938, to Harold and Elizabeth Smith in Bellows Falls, VT. She attended schools in Bellows Falls graduating high school in 1955. Shirley was predeceased by her parents and sons, Scott, David, and John Hurd, her, brother, George C. Smith, and a granddaughter, Mandy Armstrong.

She worked at Hubbard Farms for more than twenty years, single handedly raising her two surviving children, Chad Sabo and Priya Allaire. She leaves behind a daughter-in-law, Cathy Kohatsu, a son-in-law, Ryan Allaire, and her beloved grandchildren, Avery Allaire, Zoe Allaire, and Jordan Hurd.

Shirley was friend to all and always looked forward to creating new memories, as well as reminiscing with friends from the Telephone Company, where she worked for 13 years. Through the many challenges in life, Shirley was a resilient and inspiring beacon for us all, who always remained positive by showing us how to appreciate the small moments of joy life has to offer, through her love of gardening, knitting, watching her favorite television shows and spending time with her grandchildren.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Fenton and Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls, VT. At her request, there will be no services. However, there will be A Celebration of Life in her honor at the Summit Winery in Westmoreland, NH on Sunday May 19 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Jack Byrnes Center in Lebanon, NH where the amazing staff took care of Shirley as she departed with the peace, grace and dignity that she so well deserved.
