Roger William Butson

October 17, 1954 - September 8, 2026

Roger William Butson, 71, of South Acworth, NH passed away peacefully at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, NH on September 8, 2026, surrounded by loving family. He was born on October 17, 1954, the son of William and Laura (Pitkin) Butson. He attended schools in Acworth, Alstead, and Langdon graduating from Fall Mountain Regional High School in 1972.

After graduation, Roger worked as a machinist at Woodlan Tool and Machine Co. in Bellows Falls, VT. He attended Truck/Trailor Driving School in Manchester, NH evenings prior to starting his own business, Roger Butson Trucking.

Roger learned early in life about hard work and working hard. Growing up on the family farm meant getting in firewood; haying; sugaring; fixing fence. He was very proud of how physically strong he was.

There were fun things connected with farming too. Roger loved animals and they loved him. Teaching calves to lead; playing with baby piglets; learning to drive the team of steers Dad would occasionally have were all the things he loved to do. Then later in life, he had several dogs and cats that he adored including most recent dogs, his sweet Casey and mischievous Chip; and kitties, Ty and Smokey.

Other childhood events that Roger enjoyed included making homemade ice cream with the hand cranked ice cream maker; hornpouting with Dad and Uncle Tede on Stone Pond; swimming at Sand Pond, rowing the leaky boat up and down the Cold River; butchering with Dad…things that gave him character.

In 1976, Roger married “the girl next door” Patricia Starks. They had two children, Timothy and Tamara. Patty passed in 2006 and Timothy passed in 2010.

In 1998, Roger had a significant stroke. For the next 28 years, he lived with such grace. He became quite creative at figuring out how he could adapt his new life to living as normally as possible. He remained strong physically – especially in his left arm.

In 2016, Laura Morris came into his life. They were married in 2018. Laura was a huge blessing in his life as she advocated for him, helped him regain confidence and quality of life, as well as re-finding love and fun.

Survivors include his wife, Laura of South Acworth, NH; his daughter, Tamara Fischer (Scott) of Claremont, NH; step-daughters, Jacque of Keene, NH and Julia Jensen (Erik) of Long Island, NY; his sister, Bette Butson Ball of South Acworth, NH; and grandchildren, Kiley Croteau, Cody Butson, Gunnar Jensen and Rowan Jensen; a nephew, Jeffery Ring of Fairfield, IA and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Patricia (Starks) Butson; and his son, Timothy Butson.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Church on the Hill in Acworth, NH from 1:00-4:00 PM. Please come and share memories of Roger’s Life.
