Peter Niles Johnson

May 19, 1955 - September 17, 2023

Peter Niles Johnson, beloved husband and father, died suddenly on Sunday, September 17 at his summer house on Granite Lake in Munsonville, NH. Pete was a kind and loving man known for his generosity in countless ways.

Pete spent many years as a human resource recruiter in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Together with his wife, Susan they raised their daughter, Rachel in Sudbury, Massachusetts until their move to Walpole, New Hampshire in 2019 to be closer to Susan’s aging parents. Leaving his corporate life behind, Pete was gifted the opportunity to embark on his first love, home renovations. He bought and renovated several properties in West Swanzey, their home in Sudbury, Massachusetts, a family homestead in Maine, their home in Walpole, New Hampshire and most recently a summer house on Granite Lake with his dear friend, Derek MacAllister. The 1823 colonial house on Fanny Mason Lane in Walpole needed complete renovations including all new plumbing, electric, beams, floors and more, but no project was too large for Pete. He had a wonderful vision for bringing each property back to its historic significance.

Among his passions, Pete was the chairman of the renovation committee for Whitcomb Hall in Swanzey, New Hampshire. Under Pete’s watch the first floor of Whitcomb Hall reopened in 2016 in time for the 100th anniversary of this community meeting house. Funds were raised from donations and grants with his committee’s efforts and the second floor was reopened in 2020. He also proudly led the steeple renovation of the Community Church of West Swanzey.

Pete will be remembered as an extremely generous friend who was always lending a hand whenever needed. A genuine Christian who believed in giving back to his community. His warmth and love will be forever remembered.

Pete was born on May 19, 1955, in Keene, NH. In 1992, he married Susan Hubbard Johnson of Walpole, New Hampshire and in 1999 they welcomed Rachel to their family. Pete leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Susan, daughter, Rachel, brother, David and his wife, Patricia of Swanzey, New Hampshire, brother, Dale and his wife, Ann of Belchertown, Massachusetts, niece, Sandra Mitaly of Embden, Maine, nephew, Brian Johnson of Surry, New Hampshire along with numerous great nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Rachel and Frank Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at the Community Church of West Swanzey on Saturday, October 7 at 2:00 PM with a reception following at the Johnson’s mountain retreat at 792 Route 12A in Surry. The burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Pete’s memory should be sent to The Community Church of West Swanzey, PO Box 5, West Swanzey, New Hampshire, 03469 or the Chill Foundation www.chill.org/donate or 180 Queen City Park Road, Burlington, Vermont 05401.

Uptah the Big House- Jumping in the hayloft, swinging out on the rope, making forts with the bales( and Uncle Charlie fretting about us messing up his barn!!) We cousins would set “traps” made with split cedar shingles put in small tee-pees all over the yard and Uncle Norman and Charlie would stumble all over the lawn and make sure they loudly trampled through each and every one!!! 🤭😃
