Mabel L. Rhoades
Mabel L. Rhoades, long time Surry resident, 99, passed away on Thursday, November 21. She was born on June 28, 1925, in Alstead, NH, to Hugh D. and Anna (Callowhill) Clark. Mabel graduated in 1942 from Vilas High School in Alstead and in 1946 from the Elliot Hospital School of Nursing in Manchester, NH. In 1947, she married Ernest E. Rhoades, living in Keene, NH before building a house in Surry, NH in 1953 where they raised their family. Over the years, Mabel served on many committees and boards in Surry, School Board, PTA, Supervisor of the Checklist, Trustee of the Library, and History Committee.
She spent her nursing career first at the Eliott Community Hospital in Keene and then moved to Cheshire Medical when it was built working in the maternity ward, first in the nursery and then as the unit head nurse retiring in 1985. After retiring, she spent time quilting, knitting and crocheting and going to craft shows with two of her sisters.
She is predeceased by husband, Ernest E. Rhoades in 1998, parents, and sisters, Beatrice Rhoades, Hazel St. Cyr, Pearle Merrell, Mae St. Cyr, Rachel Kilburn, brother, Roscoe D. Clark and son-in-law, Kenneth Christie.
She is survived by her two children, Linda L. Christie Acworth, NH, and son, Mark E. and wife, Sharon Rhoades Keene NH, four grandchildren, Mary and husband, Jerry Henry, Kenneth J. and wife, Tina Christie, Christina and husband, Colin McGarty, and Trevor and wife, Leanne Rhoades, five great-grandchildren, Michael Henry and fiancée, Chelsea Bailey, Christopher Henry and wife, Rebecca Lebeaux, Haley and husband, Jonah Haskins, Addy McGarty, and Flynn McGarty, two sisters, Gail and husband, Richard Miller and Ethel Gendron. She also had many nieces and nephews.
There will be a Graveside service for Mabel on Friday, November 29 at 10:30 AM at the Acworth Cemetery and a reception to follow at the United Church of Acworth.
