Joan C. Whitcomb (Christie)

April 5, 1951 - October 23, 2026

Joan C. Whitcomb (Christie), 75, passed away at her family’s home in Acworth on October 23, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 5, 1951, in Acworth, NH, the daughter of Julius and Lillian Christie. Joan graduated from Fall Mountain Regional High School in 1969 and went on to earn her associate degree in accounting at North Hampton Junior College in Massachusetts. She married her late husband, Richard (Buddy) Whitcomb in 1973, soon after they built their house on Derry Hill in Acworth.

Her first job out of college was at Cray Oil in North Walpole, but the majority of her career (over 40 years) was served at R.L. Balla Inc. in Acworth. Most recently, she worked part time at Woodell Daughters in Langdon where she was considered the unofficial “human resource officer”, but was noted to be pretty easy on the mill help.

Joan loved her flower gardens and reading books from her town library and spending time with her grandchildren. Her true happiness in her life came from walking with her dogs, Charlie Brown (the one with the stick) and Captain Chase, sometimes along with her daughter and grandchildren on her family’s property. She could be seen walking her dogs in any type of weather.

She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Canfield, son in-law, Thomas Canfield and their children, Lillian, Hunter and Moxley, her one sister, Nancy Jennison and brother in-law, James Jennison, and their daughter, Christina Jennison along with several nieces, one favorite nephew and several greatnieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Lenard and Kenneth Christie, her husband, and daughter, Kathleen (Katie) Whitcomb.

Funeral Services will be held grave side on Sunday, November 15, 2026, at 2:00 PM, at the Acworth Cemetery with refreshments to follow at the United Church of Acworth.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local library, animal shelter or community’s church.

Her family would like to thank the incredible oncology medical and nursing staff at Cheshire Medical Center, as well as the hospice team at HSC.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Fenton and Hennessy Funeral Home, 55 Westminster Street, Bellows Falls, VT.
